Memoria & Fotografías
“Every morning I go to work, I go with a lot of desire and happiness. If you even want to meet me, I work on the railroad tracks”

Norberto Aníbal Napolitano, Pappo.

This project is part of a wider plan for the rehabilitation and enhancement of the Santa Cruz de Ribadulla railway station and the spaces than make it up.

It is intended the rehabilitation of the abandoned station by introducing new uses while maintaining a large sector as a cargo terminal. The general area include about 5000 m2 of public space to redefine where the platforms and existing buildings such as the old station house, a pavilion of toilets and two cargo buildings are.

The icing of the cake of all this intervention is a piece that opens a story in itself. The camel-car, which houses a coworking space for young entrepreneurs and is made thanks to a European aid committed to the rural and primarily to programs to help the fixation of population in rural areas.

In order to give boost to this initiative, the recovery of a wagon loaned by the National Railway Museum is proposed, which corresponds to the last example of the historic Renfe 593 series popularly known as “camel” for its two humps, in the upper part, where the air conditioning equipment was available, thanks to which, these units introduced and improvement and modernization in the middle distance in the eighties, as Juan Carlos Casas explains in his book “593 data on FIAT 593 trains”.

The interior space is flexibly articulated into three spaces of around 20 m2 each: an auditorium, work areas, and a meeting room. In this way and being respectful with the original structure and architecture of the tractor head, it is updated for its new life.

Today the train receives artistic interventions of graffiti artist who will give it different finishes depending on the season…

Action memory
The transfer is done by special road transport from the Monforte de Lemos railway station, where it was initially next to a passenger car unit and another motor car unit in poor condition and which has been used to obtain original and spare parts for use in the restoration of our wagon.

In regard to the external rehabilitation process, once the wagon was in its final position, all parts that might be susceptible to damage in the blasting process that followed were removed and cleaned for its subsequent priming and painted.

For the refurbishment of the interior space, all the damaged components have been repaired or replaced, all the seats have been reupholstered, a new continuous floor has been installed and the car has been equipped with internet access and all the furniture, as well as computer and audiovisual equipment to cover all possible uses.

At the entrance to the complex and in the area prior to the motor car, a pergola has been built with a system of photovoltaic panels on its roof for the electrical self-sufficiency of the wagon so that the coworking obtains a high percentage of its energy demand from a renewable energy source.
