Description

In 1985 a new church was inaugurated in Zamora. It replaces an ancient temple that is part of the road to Santiago, located in a landscape chaired by the Tera River that gives life and name to the entire region.

The parish church of Pumarejo de Tera is the work of the renowned architect Miguel Fisac Serna. How he got there and was seduced by its people is a curious story that is worth being rescued.

The construction of the church uncovers a journey worthy of recognition and value. The mark he has left is still palpable in the region and for this reason he has proposed a mixed investigation of architecture and ethnography framed under the common title of “Architecture in Tera”.

Architecture EnTera stops in the history of construction but especially in the human and social character that made this work possible. How a town seduces a prestigious architect to perform altruistically a church project and construction management. Without mediating a construction company or urban planning license of any kind, it is the neighbors themselves who undertake the work organized in crews working from sun to sun to build the temple in 73 days.

Today the stone church rises standing out from among mud buildings already very altered by the passage of time. An exhaustive photographic work and an analytical narration of the course of the work supported by the work diary allow in an original way to follow the steps of this story where the landscape, the available means and the program marked a project made reality in a coherent way. Art, construction and society come together to generate an entire architecture from beginning to end.

As part of the research Architecture enTera has proposed the experience for its cataloging as BIC (Cultural Interest property with Monument category). File that has ratified the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Junta de Castilla y León in a resolution of July 7, 2011 thus ending an administrative procedure that recognizes both human and constructive values.
