Memory & Photos

Situated in the context of a rural community / municipality (5000 inhabitants) with an ageing population, where a project linked to demographic struggle of population fixation based mainly on training and spaces for entrepreneurship is proposed. The space chosen will be the rehabilitation of the complex of the former station of Santa Cruz de Ribadulla.

The Santa Cruz de Ribadulla station comprised a complex of 9,000 m2, of which, half maintain an industrial use as a wooden loading terminal. The rest is a public space where there are a series of architectural elements such as the old house of the station, the toilets pavilion and two cargo ships, to which is added an old motor car ceded by the National Railway Museum and moved from the Monforte station.

This project, therefore, is a plan for the recovery and enhancement of the entire railway station and its component areas. An exercise that has been developed over 10 years in different phases considering the breadth of it and the budgets available for each of the phases. It is a project financed by different organizations and strategies, from national, European funds, through companies and workshop schools. A reflection of the economic difficulties of the last decade.

The former railway station of Santa Cruz de Ribadulla is located at one end of the urban core. Its use has been altered by the lack of passenger rail activity, so that through a Council-ADIF agreement some use parameters are established that drive the creation of a training center. This training center consists of a series of volumes that take advantage of existing buildings.

The actions focused mainly on the renovation works of the old needle room, the outdoor toilets and the adaptation of the carpentry of the existing storage hall on the same platform. The incorporation and adaptation of a motor car as a coworking space must be added to the full intervention.

The adaptations of all the elements were attempted to carry out maintaining the existing volumetry and holes of both the ship and other existing pavilions as the old baths of the station or the room of needles. It was realized with the minimum possible investment trying to adapt to the materials and forms given and using the traditional techniques, as well as working with employment workshops as an exercise of education and integration.

The project began with the rehabilitation of the old House of the Station, providing it with a new use dedicated to host training courses and small seminars. The later incorporation of the ships and platforms meant the adaptation of the urban space with measures of accessibility and protection (railings, toilets and sidewalks). When the public space is arranged, the nave is worked as a multi-cultural socio-cultural space.

The second ship serves as support for the first, housing the dressing rooms and warehouses.

Finally, the rehabilitation of a FIAT RENFE 593 series motor car that will be destined to coworking center and nursery of local companies, new local companies and startups. This car has three spaces for meeting rooms, work space and ICT zone for small conferences. With this piece has been officially opened to the public a complex that has not lost the use during the process of the different phases of work and which keeps in continuous growth according to the demand of necessities.
